Home Educators

Welcome to learning with Cheddar Gorge & Caves

We understand that the support home educators need can differ to that of teachers and lecturers. This area is designed to highlight information you may need in one place but may direct you to the general education pages for content applicable to all education visits.

Learning resources

We have a number of resources that are available that you can use at home such as the Cheddar YouTube channel has great content on Prehistory.

We offer an activity pack with ideas to use before, during, and after your visit. It has been designed to support learning in a variety of ways and includes guidance on the ages or learning stages each activity may suit. Schools have also used the pack to help reference the National Curriculum, while home educators are welcome to mix and match activities to suit their own topics, interests, learning styles, and their child’s individual pace and abilities.

ACTIVITY DAYS FOR HOME EDUCATORS

Activity - Rocks and Geology

You will take part in a 45-minute guided tour of Gough’s Cave, exploring the cave’s rocks and geology. During the tour, we will discuss how the cave and the gorge has been shaped by water over hundreds of millions of years.

The tour covers the full length of the cave, and the guide will be talking for most of the tour. As a result, it may be more suitable for older children, as younger visitors or those with shorter attention spans may find the extended amount of listening challenging.

If you’d prefer to explore at your own pace, you can self-guide through Gough’s Cave using the available audio tour. We also recommend downloading the accompanying worksheet before your visit, so learners can record their discoveries and observations as they explore. This flexible option is ideal for home educators who would like to tailor the experience to their own learning style and schedule.
